I went R/E for my first character, but found that the majority of the ele spells were suited for the energy storage capacity of the ele, not for the expertise affected ranger. I found that I coped sufficiently with just ranger skills.
A possible line, though, is the Elementalist 'Conjure XXXX' spells, and a corresponding bow string. I recall that the conjure spells last a long time (cast and forget) and can stack a non-trivial amount of damage onto whatever you are already using.
Maybe give that a go. Im pretty sure this has all been said before, I remember doing searches for the exact same question when i started my R/E... see what you can find

My currently-favorite Ranger build is an R/E Conjure Frost Barrage. Looks like this.
Barrage
Distracting Shot/Pin Down
Favorable Winds
Tiger's Fury
Whirling Defense
Conjure Frost
Armor of Mist
ReSig
I use it, surprisingly, with a +stance damage bow, since this Ranger came after my bow did, but that works pretty well anyways and is less vulnerable to damage reduction from enchant removal. I especially like the combination of Armor of Mists and Whirling Defense, which nets you an AL boost, a speed boost, and evasion all at once. And, obviously, damage from Conjure, Favorable Winds, and Barrage all stack up to deal some sweet hits, especially to crowds.
Really, the only thing I see working effectively with an R/E is Conjure, but Conjure works real good. You can use it with any element, I just chose Frost so I could use Armor of Mists as well. Conjure Lightning allows for stuff like Blinding Flash, Glimmering Mark [E], and Ennervate, all sorts of Condition fun, while Conjure Fire can make nasty use of Mark of Rodgort - your own or someone else's. There are perks in each line, so make sure to check out the skills available before you pick a Conjure element.

Glyph of energy/ele attunement then you can manage. You usually use secondary skills to make up for shortcomings of your primary. An example is using secondary on ele for healing (troll unguent/healing breeze/ether feast/etc. Ranger would be best using elementalist for conjures and low energy skills that coincide with your build.

hi guys
im just entering a new line of problems into this thread since i happen to play a w/e too and didnt find a topic regarding my problem (the search funktion doesnt work or i m too stupid)
so here i am at level 20 w/e and have to face my doppelgeanger or whats it called at the rock of wisdom (rough translation i m from germany so please excuse; i still think you know what i mean)
and i have no friggin idea of how to kill that thing. i just managed to get him to half his hp but that was it. is there a trick to it? i figgured out that he uses every skill i have currently equipped, so i tried to even go without a single skill and he still beats the hell out of me. he seems to hit me for around 50dmg and i only deal around 30points.
i would be very grateful for your help.

Killing your doppleganger is a piece of cake with elementalist skills. Bring only area of effect fire magic, NOTHING ELSE. Fill your fire magic, strength, (and whatever weapon you use) attributes to inflict the most possible damage. When the fight starts your dopple will cast one of the aoe skills on you, when he does simply move out of the line of fire and cast one on him. Rinse and Repeat. Probably don't even need the strength attribute, but it's there if you need to finish him off in melee.
My R/E beat his Dopple in this manner using only two skills and about 15 secs
Back on topic, I mainly use Fire magic myself. I love Flame Burst and Inferno. I'm usually barrage/interrupting, so I just use these skills to deal quick damage when being mob'd by warriors. Though you can be more offensive with them if need be.

With my r/e I use dragos vampiric flatbow,
Fire 9
Marks 12 (9+2+1)
WS 11 (10+1)
Exp 10 (9+1)
Pen attack
Dual shot
Savage Shot/Distracting Shot
Kindle Arrows
Conjure Flame
FW
Tigers Fury
Troll
As long as u have kindle on, the conjure flame will still do dmg since it converts your dmg into fire. With the net of all the skills i do about aded to the base dmg of the bow is :+40 dmg/hit for normal attakcs, +80 with dual shot, +50+AP with pen attack, and +62 while interupting a spell with savage shot.

Split your attributes up between Expertise, Marksmanship, Wilderness Survival and Fire Magic. Equip Conjure Fire, Kindle Arrows, and your favorite bow attacks and a your favorite bow (doesn't necessarily have to be a fire bow). Kindle Arrows turns your bow into a fire bow, so you can use a zealous bow, a sundering bow, or whatever you like. This allows you to stack a bunch of damage onto your arrows. I usually use Dual Shot + Quick Shot for some heavily stacked and quick bow damage.
